The Government tried to ban this family car?!

On the surface the Lotus Carlton looks like an ordinary sedan. Four doors, a little trunk space, something your dad might have driven to the office on a Tuesday if you lived in England. But underneath the boxy exterior is one of the most mental stories to ever come out of the early 90s.

Lotus essentially took the older Vauxhall Carlton, ripped everything that was boring out, and dropped in a 3.6L twin turbocharged straight six that made 377hp. In 1990... In a family sedan... To put that into perspective, it was faster than a Ferrari Testarossa and a Porsche 911 Turbo straight off the showroom floor, with a top speed that got British politician's crumpets so worked up that they tried to have it banned.

A car so fast the government wanted it GONE. 
It's good that we dumped their tea into the ocean 250 years ago. they deserve it.

However, the speed of the Carlton is only part of the story. Lotus and GM reengineered the suspension, the brakes, the gearbox, and all of the aerodynamics. It was a complete transformation built by people who genuinely understood performance. Every detail was obsessed over, and it shows in the way the car drove.

Unfortunately, only 950 were ever made. They were expensive new, they're rare now, and the people who own them treat them like the icons they are. Don't sleep on this ROCKET SHIP of a dad car.
