Before Solange Knowles was a singer and songwriter, she was a dancer — and she had every intention of staying one.⁠ ⁠ As a teenager, Solange was training five days a week at a conservatory with her sights set on Juilliard, when she was pulled onto the Destiny's Child tour as a last-minute replacement dancer. It wasn't part of her plan. On the road, she tore her meniscus and was told she wouldn't be able to dance for years. "It was a total devastation for me," she recalls in a new interview with AnOther Magazine. "I'd had my life planned out."⁠ ⁠ Stranded at the back of the tour bus with a cast, she started writing "seriously emo songs" because she "just needed to get the feelings out." Kelly Rowland heard her humming melodies and invited her into the studio, where she wrote "Obsession" for Rowland at around 15 or 16 years old. "That was sort of the moment I decided I wanted to be a songwriter," Solange says.
