Earl Sweatshirt (AKA Thebe Neruda Kgositsile) has ventured on a path through the music industry that is uniquely his own. He first started releasing music on MySpace under the name Sly Tendencies, but was quickly discovered by Tyler, The Creator – which led to him coming up with the name Earl Sweatshirt and to joining Odd Future.

After releasing his debut mixtape ‘Earl’ that was produced largely by Tyler himself, Thebe was sent to a boarding school in Samoa by his mom because him and his friends kept getting into trouble. (If you ever hear someone say “Free Earl,” this is what they’re referring to btw)

During this time he studied books like Malcolm X’s biography, and wrote raps for songs including Odd Future’s ‘Oldie’ – only to be brought back to the states by Tupac’s first manager (Leila Steinberg) who actually still manages him today.

Since that time Earl has become a mainstay in modern day rap and in the music industry at large. He released 7 projects over the 13 years that have followed, ranging from his star-studded debut ‘Doris’ that featured Frank Ocean, RZA, and Vince Staples, all the way to his latest and most mature project to date – ‘Live Laugh Love.’

He also has a production alias under the name ‘randomblackdude’ where he has worked on countless of his own tracks like ‘Hive’ and ‘Chum,’ as well as on ‘New Faces V2’ and ‘The Star Room’ by Mac Miller just to name a few.

Thebe entered the public eye at a young age when social media was first forming its identity, and we all have been able to grow alongside him as he has peeled back layers of his own psyche from project to project.

Whether you listened to Earl’s initial music over a decade ago, or if you’re just now finding his work, one thing is for certain – Earl Sweatshirt has changed the music industry for the better.

Happy Birthday Thebe, and we hope you keep getting your flowers 💐🎂
