I never in a million years would’ve thought I’d move back home, fall in love, buy a farm, and end up hosting the kind of “everyone belongs” gathering my small town never prioritized — especially for the people who get pushed to the edges.

But last week the Tennessee House passed a bill that explicitly targets the marriage I’m so lucky to have.

I was already exhausted, but I needed to show up.

What I didn’t expect was my mom staying with us all day. We sat face to face with the author of this bill, and he looked me in the eye and told me he does not recognize my marriage to my husband.

This isn’t just “Republican vs Democrat.” This is about a moral compass that’s been lost — and about whether our neighbors get to live with dignity.

At one point I was told they’re “not in the business of worrying about my feelings.” So I said fine — let’s talk dollars: these bills will be challenged in court, and Tennesseans will pay for it.

I hate reducing my marriage to a fiscal line item. But I’m so often told that’s what this party cares about.

The hardest part was asking, “How does my marriage impact your marriage in any way?” The silence before he replied… “I don’t recognize your marriage.”

The only bright spot is that there is votegloriaj repjasonpowell justinjpearson aftynbehn4tn and the Progressive Caucus, plus organizations like tnequality. There is still fight because, as Justin Pearson said, “you cannot expel hope.”

I’m grateful for those who fight for ALL of Tennessee. But you have to know what’s at stake.
