Nebraska heads into another ranked showdown this weekend riding the momentum of its biggest win of the young season.

The Cornhuskers (4-3) picked up their first ranked victory of the year Sunday, routing No. 16 Florida State 10-1 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Now, Nebraska travels to face No. 7 Auburn in a three-game series.

“It’s going to be a great challenge,” Nebraska head coach Will Bolt said of the matchup. “They’re athletic and go all out on defense. Their starting pitching has been dominant and elite. That ballpark lends itself to balls flying out, so it’s a great opportunity to go show who we are.”

Nebraska showed plenty against the Seminoles.

The Huskers erupted for 10 runs on 10 hits, with shortstop Dylan Carey leading the way. Carey went 3-for-5, finishing a triple shy of the cycle while driving in five runs. He capped his day with a two-run inside-the-park home run.

“As soon as I rounded third, I almost tripped a little bit,” Carey said. “Then I saw them kind of tell me where to go and where to slide. When I got in there, it was pretty sweet. Never had that before.”

On the mound, Gavin Blachowicz delivered five strong innings to earn the win, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Nebraska’s pitching staff combined to hold Florida State to two hits.

The Huskers believe facing top competition early will pay dividends as they prepare for Big Ten play and a bid for a third straight conference tournament title.

“To play those teams and know what it takes to beat teams like that is good, especially coming into conference play,” Gavin Blachowicz said. “The Big Ten’s a good conference this year with a lot of good teams. We’ll be ready.”

If Nebraska can replicate its dominant performance against Florida State, it could make for a competitive weekend against the Tigers.
