The State of the Union shouldn’t be a lesson in division.

The State of the Union has become a ritualized standoff. One side rises, the other stays seated. Applause is calculated. Reactions are strategic. Even silence is political.

We’ve normalized leadership that treats division as inevitable, and sometimes even as an advantage. That needs to change.

Not because disagreement is bad. In a country this large and diverse, disagreement is unavoidable. But contempt, reflexive opposition, and performative outrage aren’t inevitable—they’re habits. And habits can be broken.

The president and our leaders set the tone. Moments when the chamber stands together, even briefly, matter because they remind us that unity doesn’t require uniformity. Policy fights shouldn’t feel like loyalty tests. And standards—integrity, rejecting political violence, honoring service—are the kinds of expectations we should be able to look to our president and our leaders to consistently meet.
