Off the southern coast of Argentina lie the Falkland Islands, a place paulnicklen often passed on his way to Antarctica but never had the chance to truly stay. 

One day, he decided the Falklands would be the destination. Along endless slopes of tussock grass, nearly 200,000 pairs of black-browed albatross nest alongside tens of thousands of gentoo and rockhopper penguins.

These islands hold a complicated history. For more than 200 years they have endured colonization, sealing and whaling, invasive species, and war. In the 1980s, conflict between Argentina and the UK left thousands of landmines scattered across the landscape. In an unexpected twist, those fenced-off minefields became refuges, allowing entire ecosystems to recover close to their original state. Penguins and seabirds, too light to trigger the explosives, bred undisturbed for decades.

To Paul, these wild pockets of the Falklands felt like heaven. They gave him hope that even after centuries of disturbance, nature can recover if we just get out of the way.
