The Black women who laid the foundations of House music are not nearly as celebrated as they should be. 

Here is a list of 5 Black women DJs/Producers who were instrumental in the 80s and 90s. This does not include some of favorite vocalists, I intend to do a part two. 💖

💿 Stacey Hotwaxx Hale (hotwaxxhale) is a Chicago house DJ, radio host, and educator with roots in the city’s West Side. She built a decades-long career through WGCI, WHPK, and international tours. Her work centers Black women DJs and preserves Chicago house history through teaching and archiving.

💿 Sharon White (sharonwhite9028/ djsharonwhite01 ) is a Chicago house DJ and one of the genre’s early women selectors. She held residencies in foundational clubs during house music’s formative years. Her presence helped normalize women behind the decks in a male-dominated scene.

DJ Paulette (dj_paulette1) is a UK house DJ and author tied to the Hacienda and Manchester’s club legacy. She became one of the first women to hold a long-term residency at the Hacienda. Her career bridges Chicago house influence with UK club culture and documentation.

💿 Yvonne Turner (yvonnetstrong) is a Harlem-born, New York City House DJ and radio personality with deep ties to community-driven dance spaces. She built her name through local clubs and radio platforms. Her work reflects house music as social release and collective care.

💿 Lady D (djladyd) is a Chicago house DJ, producer, and label founder. She launched one of the first house labels led by a Black woman in Chicago. Her career blends DJing, production, and mentorship within the city’s house ecosystem.
