I absolutely LOVED designing my own curriculum and pursuing my academic interests by creating my own major. We pay so much for these degrees we may as well study something we’re truly passionate about!

My premed advisors actually all counseled me against designing my own major because they said it wouldn’t be taken seriously and/or it could tank my GPA. But because I was taking classes I was truly interested in, I was way more motivated to learn and I think this actually helps my GPA in long-term! 
.
I feel like I got so much value out of my education and the classes I took have even guided my patient interactions throughout medical school and will continue to inform me as I start my first job as a resident doctor this summer.

It also upset me how little Nutrition we were taught in medical school. I learned so much about preventative medicine through classes I took like nutrition problems in the US, metabolism, human performance, and nutrition in the life cycle.  I’ve noticed many doctors are simply misinformed (or were never taught in the first place) how to properly counsel patients on diet & exercise, which is the single most fundamental principle of preventative medicine. We gloss over the benefits of a high fiber diet while prescribing statins like candy.
