When David beats Goliath. You’d have been crazy to bet on TSS Rovers on Wednesday. After all, they’re the semi-pro team of a youth academy in British Columbia. Just last year, they’d had their inaugural season in League1 BC, clawing their way to the league final and winning on penalties. This agonizing title gave them the right to play in the 2023 Canadian Championship — a prestigious tournament up North that pits eleven pro teams against three semi-pro teams in Canada. In this week’s preliminary round cup tie, they had to beat none other than CPL leaders Valour FC. No easy feat. But something unexplainable happened at Swanguard Stadium. One of those moments that remind us why soccer is the greatest sport in the world. There’s no logic to it. The 5,000-seat ground turned into a cathedral as we all witnessed a miracle unfold before our eyes. One, two, and three goals by the Rovers within a half-hour period. We all had to pinch ourselves after each explosive celebration. It was a 3-1 thrashing in the end, and the Rovers became the first semi-pro team to beat a professional side in the history of the Canadian Championship. We still can’t believe our eyes. But this couldn’t have happened to a better team. The Rovers are the first fan-owned club in Canada, and they celebrated it just like a family. Academy players, ball boys, and fans all stormed the pitch as the final whistle blew. Amidst the chaos, all head coach Will Cromack could say was, “We’re pirates, we’re gonna go and take your loot. That’s who we are, that’s our culture, that’s the people that we are." Honestly, can’t help but root for them to snatch the biggest prize in this already historic cup run.
