Happy Birthday to the 14th Dalai Lama!

To celebrate this auspicious day, Tashi Chödrön, Himalayan programs & communities ambassador at the Rubin, highlights this sculpture of the Fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, currently in our exhibition “Gateway to Himalayan Art.”

The Dalai Lamas are a tulku lineage that has played a central role in Tibetan history for the last five hundred years. The fifth incarnation, Ngawang Gyatso (1617–1682), allied with a Mongol khan to unite most of the Tibetan Plateau, forming the Ganden Podrang government that would govern Tibet until 1959. The Dalai Lamas are understood to be emanations of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.

Traditionally in Tibet, people celebrate this day as “Kundun Trungkar Duchen,” or “Trunglha Yarsol,” with celebrations of song and dance. Tashi shares how she celebrated this special day growing up in India.

Visit the sculpture on view in “Gateway to Himalayan Art” location on the second floor of our 17th Street building before it closes on October 6, 2024.
