Kunsang Kyirong (@kha_tsapo) is a filmmaker and animator who explores themes of memory and immigration, often through a hybrid method that integrates documentary elements within fictionalized narratives. She aims to create stories that feel universal in their themes but from a perspective or cultural view that is unfamiliar to the viewer.

Her first short film, “Yarlung,” follows the relationship of three siblings and their experiences of loss at the edges of the Yarlung Tsangpo, a river in the Tibetan region. She hand-drew the animations frame by frame, an important process for the artist. Each image was photographed and then erased, creating a sequence of images that is both a reclamation of memory and an autoethnographic piece.

The film is inspired by Kunsang Kyirong’s childhood memories of visiting her mother’s former refugee camp, Tezu, in Arunachal Pradesh, India.
