These are a special type of glial cell in the salamander brain, which are similar to the star-shaped astrocytes found in our brains. They react to injury by creating new cells to repair the damage in a salamander's brain. By studying them, neuroscientist Maria Antonietta Tosches aims to better understand how our brains respond to neurodegenerative diseases and shed light on new treatments.
