What looks like stardust is actually a memory forming. This is a snapshot of the brain’s basolateral amygdala, where emotionally important memories are stored. Scientists used a technique called MERFISH to capture how certain neurons—and nearby astrocytes—change after a lasting experience. These patterns can persist for weeks, offering a glimpse into how memories stick with us.
Understanding how memories are written into the brain could help us unlock new insights into conditions that disrupt learning, memory and emotion.
