🕵️Meet Joe DeRisi (right), medical mystery detective and President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco. His latest investigation was sparked by pediatric ICU doctor Aaron Bodansky who approached him after encountering children with life-threatening, multi-organ inflammatory diseases (MIS-C) after mild COVID-19 infections. 

Joe and Aaron started looking for answers. Using cutting-edge technology, they analyzed 200 samples and found that autoantibodies were targeting a protein called SNX8, which closely resembles a part of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This molecular mimicry was causing children’s immune systems to mistakenly attack their own cells. This breakthrough has not only solved the mystery of MIS-C but also highlighted the power of innovative collaborative research.

They used this same technology to profile nearly 40,000 individuals across various autoimmune diseases, creating potential for more discovery using AI and ML.
