On Saturday, March 29, 1997, Universal Studios Hollywood unleashed a Gak filled, slime-soaked explosion of 1990s kid culture with the grand opening of Totally Nickelodeon inside the Panasonic Theater.

Marketed as a live interactive experience where kids were in control, Totally Nickelodeon brought the energy of the network’s biggest shows straight to the stage. From the moment guests entered the brightly repainted theater, it was clear this was not a typical theme park show. It was loud, colorful, competitive, and unapologetically messy.

Audience members were randomly selected to compete in games and stunts inspired by Nickelodeon favorites like Family Double Dare, Nickelodeon GUTS, The Secret World of Alex Mack, All That, and Rugrats.

Two of the biggest crowd pleasers were:

• The Pie Pod, inspired by What Would You Do?
• The Sliminator, a custom-built device that drenched brave volunteers in gallons of Nickelodeon’s signature Green Slime

One unforgettable stunt placed two parents into carts, dressed as hamburgers, while their kids attempted to stack oversized ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and “special sauce” pieces on their heads to complete the burger. It was chaotic. It was ridiculous. It was peak 1990s Nickelodeon.

The show ran from 1997 through May 2000. It was replaced by Rugrats Magic Adventure, which ran from June 2000 to September 2001, followed by Shrek 4D, which operated from May 2003 to August 2017. The venue is now home to the DreamWorks Theatre – Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest, which opened on June 15, 2018.

Totally Nickelodeon captured a moment in time when slime ruled television and kids truly had the upper hand. For a few years in the late 90s, the Panasonic Theater wasn’t just a show venue. It was a full-blown Nick playground, and if you were sitting in the splash zone, you were part of the action.
