Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old plumber, has become the first Green Party candidate to win a Westminster by-election.
 
Labour, which took the seat in Gorton and Denton with more than 50% of the vote in the 2024 general election, were pushed into third place behind Reform UK. 
 
"Even under chaos, even under pressure, I get things done. I am no different from every single person in this constituency." Spencer said. 
 
"Our struggles might not be the same...but we stick up for each other," she told her constituents.
 
Rather than winning narrowly, the party won 40.7%, enough to put them as much as 12 points ahead of second placed Reform.
 
The result will put fresh pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
