Lindsay Lohan is reflecting on the pressures of growing up in Hollywood and questioning why she wasn’t better protected at the height of her early fame.

The 39-year-old actor looked back on her rapid rise in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

“I should have listened to my mom and dad and moved back to New York. But I was young and wanted to be in LA. And I didn’t know,” she started. “So yeah, while a lot of it was fun, it was hard when I was young. It was a double-edged sword.”

Lohan became a household name at 11 with ‘The Parent Trap’ and saw her fame rise with ‘Freaky Friday’ opposite Jamie Lee Curtis, followed by classics like ‘Mean Girls.’ But as her career developed, so did tabloid attention and legal troubles that unfolded in the public eye.

She added, “Now I look back and wonder, ‘Why didn’t anyone just go and take me out of there, protect me more?’ You don’t know how to do that yourself when you’re a teenager.”

With recent Netflix rom-coms and a return to the big screen, Lohan says she’s found new confidence in this chapter of her career.

“When I was younger, I wasn’t so comfortable saying how I felt about a character and being involved with the process of it,” she explained. “And I love that part now. I always felt like I had too many people around me and that I was being guided in a different direction. And now it feels good to steer my own ship.”
