Sam is a young woman living with Down syndrome and micropthalmia, a rare condition where one eye does not fully develop. Sam is blind in that eye and wears a prosthetic eye with confidence and grace. 

Micropthalmia is rare on its own- the chances of having Ds and Micropthalmia are about 1 in 3.5 million. That makes Sam incredibly rare…but what truly makes her extraordinary is her heart, strength, and her light. 

Rare Disease Day is about more than statistics- it’s about people. It’s about stories.  It’s about celebrating individuals who remind us that #differentisbeautiful and rarity is powerful.
