In a July 10, 2021 game against his old team, the New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole threw a career-high 129 pitches and dominated the Houston Astros in a 1-0 complete-game shutout, striking out 12 and allowing only three hits. 

With two outs in the ninth and the Yankees up by one, manager Aaron Boone came out to the mound—likely to consider a pitching change—but Cole emphatically told him he wasn’t coming out, insisting on finishing the game. Boone relented and Cole struck out Yordan Álvarez on three fastballs to seal the victory.
