## Caption

As Cuba faces serious economic uncertainty and increased pressure from the U.S., many of the island’s citizens are struggling to survive as life is slowly grinding to a halt due to food and fuel shortages and daily power outages. Cubans have been dealing with limited resources for years, but the crisis has worsened following the end of oil shipments from Venezuela and restrictions from other countries who have been pressured by the U.S. Drivers are scheduling appointments to get gas months in advance, classes have been cancelled at several schools, public transportation has stopped running, and government-run hospitals are cutting services.

Additionally, food shortages have become more dire, as the lack of fuel limits the flow of food and produce to many municipalities, and the food that is available is priced in dollars, making it expensive for the average Cuban. Daily power outages are now harder to manage due to the lack of food, medicine, and transportation, and private companies importing food have suspended operations as they are no longer able to refrigerate their products. With these challenges, Cubans on the island are struggling to see how daily life can continue. Havana resident and mother Alejandra told El País: “Everyday life is becoming increasingly difficult… One day I got home with my daughter and, once again, there was neither gas nor electricity. Exhausted after eight hours of work, I had to feed my daughter and I couldn’t. I burst into tears.”
