🍻 Did you know the “McGovern” behind mcgoverns_tavern is a Rutgers–Newark alumnus?

Sean McGovern ’89, who will be attending Homecoming this Saturday, majored in Political Science and History and spent his college years behind the bar representing the family-owned tavern.

Founded by McGovern’s great-uncle, an immigrant from Ireland 🇮🇪, the tavern has proudly carried its Irish roots since opening its doors in 1936.

Today, the iconic tavern, a fixture in Newark’s community for nearly 90 years, remains proudly family-run, and the bond between the university, the city, and the bar continues to thrive. Many RU–N alumni and students have worked (and still work) at McGovern’s, keeping that connection strong.

“Rutgers has been a good partner for us and for the city,” McGovern said. “They’ve changed together, and Rutgers has a lot to do with how great this neighborhood looks and how well it’s doing. I don’t think Newark could have a better partner than Rutgers in the city.”
