On the shore of Lake Laugarvatn sits a little SLICE of heaven called Laugarvatn Fontana. @fontanaiceland is an incredible place on Iceland’s Golden Circle where you can not only stop and take a break in their amazing steam baths, relaxing pools, and Finnish-style sauna, but do something I’m willing to bet you’ve never done before... ...eat rye bread cooked for 24 hours by the boiling water in the ground from geothermal heat! What? Yep! The ground is so hot it is literally boiling water! Once you find these hot spots you can cook on them. I know. It’s insane but they know what they’re doing. They’ve been baking rye bread like this in the hot volcanic black sand since 1929! aaaaand let me tell you it is QUITE delicious! Rúgbrauð known as hverabrauð or “hot-spring-bread” is a deep amber-colored, bouncy, chewy, soft but firm, incredibly special rye bread one can enjoy in Iceland. It’s not like the rye bread we know from home - it’s more like a cake, and boy is it good! After exhuming it and slicing it, Laugarvatn Fontana serves it with fresh locally made butter alongside locally sourced smoked trout. We went back for fifths. IT. WAS. SO. GOOD. Coupled with their homemade soups and cafe treats and we were in heaven. Laugarvatn Fontana not only creates an amazing, beautiful, and peaceful space for its visitors but pledges to be a good citizen of the world. They recognize their environmental responsibility and strive for sustainability. They use local and nature-friendly products and encourage their guests to participate as well. I don’t know what was more fun, eating the incredible bread or soaking in their amazing pools.
