A startup called Reflect Orbitals is literally taking orders to deliver sunlight after dark. It sounds like a sci-fi movie, but they are actively working to launch massive mirrors into low Earth orbit right now.

The space logistics behind this are wild. 🛰️ 

These orbiting reflectors are designed to catch the sun’s rays from space and bounce a targeted, 5-kilometer-wide beam of light down to Earth. Because of how fast they orbit, one satellite can currently only illuminate a specific spot for about four minutes at a time. 

It’s less “endless summer” and more “very intense celestial spotlight.”

It’s an incredibly ambitious idea, but the actual endgame here isn’t just a party trick. It has incredible real world applications that could have a major positive impact on multiple sectors: 

- Agricultural Support: provide targeted light to crops, potentially extending growing seasons.
- Disaster Relief: Illuminates large disaster zones during power outages, drastically improving the efficiency of search and rescue operations.
- Cleaner Industrial Lighting: Replaces noisy, polluting diesel light towers for large-scale nighttime construction, mining, and farming.
- Reduced Battery Reliance: Lessens the need for massive, expensive grid-scale batteries by making solar energy more continuous.

However, not everyone is thrilled—astronomers are already sounding the alarm about light pollution ruining our view of the cosmos. 🔭 

My opinion?

If executed responsibly, this tech has the potential to do a massive amount of good in the world—and we should absolutely be excited about that. But let’s be real: tech startups don’t exactly have a flawless track record when it comes to self-regulation. We have to seriously weigh if trading our natural, starry night skies for on-demand daytime is actually worth the risk. And if it is, what do we have in place to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand?
