Most runners skip explosive training.

But running is actually a power movement.

Every step requires you to absorb force and then produce force back into the ground in a fraction of a second. If your training never challenges that system, you’re leaving performance on the table.

Adding explosive work like box jumps, broad jumps, or medicine ball throws can improve:

• Running economy – using less energy at the same pace
• Rate of force development – how quickly you can apply force into the ground
• Tendon stiffness & elasticity – better energy return each stride
• Neuromuscular coordination – more efficient stride mechanics
• Durability – stronger tissues that tolerate impact better

For hybrid athletes, explosive work also bridges the gap between lifting and endurance.

Heavy strength training builds force.
Explosive training teaches your body to use that force quickly.

You don’t need a lot either.

2–3 sets of high-quality jumps once or twice per week can go a long way for improving running performance and durability.

Strength → Power → Performance.
