Ever heard the question: would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?

Ants faced a version of that question millions of years ago. New research shows some ant species invest less in their outer armor (their cuticle) because it’s expensive to build. Instead, colonies produce more workers, even if each ant is less physically tough.

The result? A system designed to absorb losses.

Removing a few worker ants doesn’t slow things down. Food still gets found. Nests stay defended. More ants get made.

That’s why ant problems aren’t about individual bugs, they’re about the colony as a whole.
