The US Copyright Office has ruled that works created solely by AI cannot be copyrighted, but works combining human creativity with AI can be, provided there is sufficient human input. For artists and producers using AI tools to make music, the line is clear. A producer who arranges AI-generated sounds into an original composition can copyright the arrangement, but not the individual sounds. AI as a tool is protected, but AI as the sole author is not. The issue has been working its way through the courts for years. The Supreme Court recently declined to hear computer scientist Stephen Thaler's appeal, effectively closing the door on the argument that AI systems can hold intellectual property rights. What remains unresolved is whether AI companies can continue using copyrighted music to train their models without permission or payment. __ #pigeonsandplanes #ai #tata #copyright
