“I think the goal was actually to be seen,” criminologist James Densley says of school shooters. “These are individuals who've lived a life where they weren't recognized, weren't noticed. They felt insignificant. And this was one way of reclaiming their significance through this act of violence,” he explains. Densley and Jillian Peterson are professors of criminology and founders of the St. Paul, Minnesota, nonprofit, the Violence Prevention Project. Together, they have spent the last 10 years researching hundreds of mass shootings. Through their work, they've interviewed both shooters and people who knew them to better understand their pathways to violence and how to stop them. #schoolsafety #gunviolence #violenceprevention #schoolshootings #criminology
