For Women’s History Month, we celebrate FAMU alumna Keturah Bernice Johnson Mitchell, a first-generation Rattler whose life reflects education with caring.

A 1976 graduate of FAMU’s College of Education, Mitchell dedicated her career to shaping young minds as a second-grade teacher, helping build the academic and personal foundations of countless students.

Her classroom was known as a space of encouragement, structure, and compassion, where students were supported, challenged, and inspired to love learning.

Her commitment to FAMU did not end at graduation or retirement. Mitchell remains an active lifetime member of the FAMU National Alumni Association Broward County Chapter, where she serves as Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee, recruiting future Rattlers and visiting schools across Broward County to share her story and encourage the next generation to pursue higher education.

Rooted in faith, family, and service, she and her husband, fellow Rattler Gregory A. Mitchell, will celebrate 50 years of marriage in July 2026.

Together they raised two daughters who share their parents’ love for education, community, and FAMU.

Her legacy is one of perseverance and generational impact.
