Artists take Olympic! 🎨

Thirteen poets, painters, and more spent last week immersing themselves in nature, sharing their work with visitors, and connecting the loving act of creating art with the work needed to save our warming planet. Coming from as far away as Belgium and as nearby as Poulsbo, WA, these lucky thirteen were among the 40 artists who created art memorializing the park's vanishing glaciers for the Terminus project.

There were too many magical moments to name, but here are a few of our favorites: Kait passing out embroidery kits for everyone to stitch their own mountains, wildflowers, and banana slugs. Bénédicte leading a haiku writing workshop in THREE languages because her audience spoke English, German, and Dutch. Five little girls bringing their own nature journals to Heather's presentation on naturalist journaling. Everyone getting in on the action to create prints in the sun using photo paper and natural objects, and trying their hand at weaving on a loom (even the rangers couldn't resist!). Scientist Bill Baccus pointing out Kim's glacier to her in real life, after she wove a tapestry for it over the last year based only on photos.

And finally, a beautiful keynote speech at the closing reception from poet Rena Priest, who reminded us of the change of perspective that will save our planet:

"We create for beauty—shift our vision of beauty from material to kindness. Are we kind to the earth? To each other? We see through the eyes of the other and search for a way to understand—search for the place where we can have a meeting of minds because we live on this burning planet together. This is our only home. Our only hope."

If you’re in Port Angeles for Labor Day Weekend, you can visit the exhibit one last time! The final day at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center will be September 3rd, then the art can be viewed on our website.
