The Alabama Legislature is considering the idea of closing the state’s political primaries. Under current law, Alabama does not require voters to declare a party when they register.

Any registered voter can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary. Alabama passed a law in 2017 to prohibit crossover voting, but otherwise the primaries are open to all voters.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville said he has talked with Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, about changing that: “We have to do something about Democrats voting in our primary elections.”

No legislation has been introduced yet. Alabama is one of only eight states with open primaries, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
