Tyler, The Creator turns 35 today, and few artists have had a journey like his... 👀

He first broke through in the late 2000s as the leader of Odd Future, a loose collective of teenagers from Los Angeles who built a massive following online without industry backing. Tyler handled much of the production himself, releasing Bastard in 2009 before exploding with the “Yonkers” video in 2011. Around him was a group that would become hugely influential in their own right: Earl Sweatshirt, the lyrical prodigy Tyler discovered on MySpace as a teenager, and Frank Ocean, who joined the crew before redefining alternative R&B with Channel Orange and Blonde. Odd Future shows became chaotic cultural moments, and the collective helped define an entire internet era of hip hop.

Tyler’s own music evolved dramatically over time. Early projects like Goblin leaned into shock value, but by Cherry Bomb he was experimenting with jazz chords and unconventional production. That creative shift fully came into focus with Flower Boy, which revealed a more introspective and melodic Tyler. He followed it with IGOR, a synth-heavy concept album that debuted at No. 1 and won a Grammy despite barely sounding like traditional rap.

With Call Me If You Get Lost, he returned to rapping while building a luxury travel aesthetic inspired by mixtape culture and DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz era. At the same time, Tyler built one of the most complete creative worlds in music through Golf Wang, Camp Flog Gnaw, and his self-directed visuals.

What started as a group of teenagers making music for the internet turned into one of the most influential creative movements of the last two decades. At 35, Tyler’s legacy as an artist, producer, and creative architect is already cemented.
