Can a map take you on a pilgrimage?
This 19th-century woodblock print of Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province, China, traces temple routes across the sacred mountain believed to be the earthly abode of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom.

Pilgrims bow in prayer, the Maitreya Festival gathers crowds, and Mongolian travelers arrive by camel—drawn by both worship and trade.

We continue this year’s "Himalayan Art Up Close" series with Rubin Museum Senior Curator Dr. Karl Debreczeny and Smarthistory’s Dr. Beth Harris, exploring how this map functioned as both a guide for travelers and a powerful tool for devotional experience—one that continues to shape pilgrimage to this day.
