Fashion is one of the largest industries in the world. It’s responsible for massive greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, pollution and waste. And most of the materials used in clothing come at a high cost for wildlife.
 
Too Hot for Knitwear, a new study by Choose_Wild and CollectiveFashionJustice, analyzed the Fall 2022 online catalogs of 13 high-street and luxury fashion brands. The findings?

🐑: Most wool apparel is blended with synthetic fibers, weaving the worst aspects of #FossilFuel production and animal agriculture into every garment.

🐑: High-street brands were more than twice as likely to use synthetics in wool knitwear and 26 times more likely to offer 100% synthetic knitwear.

🐑: There is very little use of reduced-impact fibers like Tencel, bamboo, linen or organic cotton.

“The fashion industry has tried to pass wool off as a sustainable alternative to synthetics, but that claim quickly unravels when you take a closer look,” said the Center's Stephanie Feldstein. “Even 100% wool fiber production leads to deforestation and threatens wildlife. There are real eco-friendly materials out there, but wool isn’t one of them.”
