We’re back on the road this year with continental_tire, continuing our journey to uncover the hidden gems of soccer across the US!

On mile 1,287 of our travels in 2026, we visited a stadium that quite literally changed the game here in the States.

Inter & Co Stadium opened up in 2017, at a time when safe standing supporters’ sections did not exist in our country. It almost sounds too crazy to say (since now these have become the norm), but back then, this key design feature was almost exclusively seen in places like Germany, Scotland, and a few other destinations across European football.

Right as these types of stands were growing in popularity around the world in the mid-2010s, Orlando City SC was in the midst of building their own stadium. And that’s when the fans stepped in with a brilliant request.

From the outset, they clamored for a safe standing section (similar to those seen at Dortmund) to create a better home-field advantage. From there, the front office researched existing stadiums, talked to league officials, and created a steeply-graded safe standing section with rails and cupholders for nearly 4,000 fans.

When the stadium opened in 2017, it became the first large-scale safe standing section in North America, according to MLS.

Ever since then, these types of stands—characterized by rails and steep rakes to create a safe, but imposing atmosphere—have become commonplace throughout MLS and beyond.

Many older stadiums transformed their existing designs to incorporate safe standing sections, and all the newest venues since 2017 seem to have them, influencing the way supporters groups across the country cheer on their teams during a matchday.

That’s why, it felt really special to get to visit Orlando for this Sunday Night Soccer game and check out where this architectural trend began in the States.
