The SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) is a fibromuscular layer beneath the skin that connects the facial muscles to the superficial tissues and helps support the overall structure of the face. It plays an important role in maintaining facial shape and transmitting muscle movement to the skin.

As we age, this support system gradually loses elasticity and tone, which contributes to the descent of facial tissues. For this reason, when working with the face, it is important to respect the natural architecture of this layer and follow the natural lifting vectors of the face.

If the skin and underlying tissues are repeatedly dragged in the wrong direction or manipulated aggressively, it can place unnecessary strain on the connective tissues that support the face. Over time, excessive traction may contribute to tissue laxity and weakening of the facial support structures. Instead of aggressive pulling, techniques should focus on controlled pressure, proper direction, and good tissue support. When we work with the anatomy rather than against it, we help maintain the integrity of the facial structures and support a healthier, more lifted appearance over time.
