The BBC Director General, #TimDavie, has released a detailed document for the first time, outlining the events that led to the BAFTA broadcast incident. The incident report acknowledged that the BBC failed to edit out Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson shouting the N-word towards ‘Sinners’ stars Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan from its coverage of the BAFTA Film Awards. This content remained on BBC iPlayer for 15 hours after the ceremony concluded.

According to Davie, there was an oversight in the editing process. At the time of filming, no one in the broadcast truck was aware that Davidson had shouted the N-word during the live show. While it was not until Davidson shouted the racial slur again at ‘Sinners’ actress #WunmiMosaku—who won Best Supporting Actress—that the production team realized there had been confusion regarding the first and second instances of the slur.

The report also noted that the show remained on iPlayer that night because the on-site team did not believe the slur was audible in the broadcast. Davie stated, “We are now looking in more detail why the team did not ascertain sooner that there had been two instances of the use of the racial slur, and why post broadcast further action was not taken to edit or remove the programme from iPlayer sooner.” He concluded by acknowledging that the BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) is further examining the incident.
