🚨 BREAKING: Pam Bondi’s Justice Department sparks outrage with a proposal that could shield federal lawyers from independent ethics investigations.

In a move that has legal experts sounding the alarm, the Justice Department is pushing a rule that would allow the Attorney General to intervene in — and potentially halt — state bar investigations into misconduct by federal attorneys.

Under the proposal, if a state bar association opens an ethics probe into a DOJ lawyer, the Attorney General could step in and force the investigation to pause while the Justice Department conducts its own review. If the DOJ later decides its lawyer did nothing wrong, the state investigation could effectively be shut down.

Critics say that would create a dangerous precedent: the federal government policing its own attorneys while blocking independent oversight.

Hilary Gerzhoy, who chairs the rules review committee for the D.C. Bar, warned the idea is “incredibly concerning” and conflicts with a long-standing principle of the U.S. legal system — that state courts regulate the professional conduct of lawyers.

The timing is raising eyebrows. Ethics complaints have been mounting against DOJ officials connected to controversial actions during the Trump administration, particularly involving aggressive immigration enforcement and other politically charged legal battles.

Whistleblower attorney Kevin Owen said the proposal could also discourage or intimidate people from filing misconduct complaints, warning it appears designed to interfere with states’ authority to discipline lawyers.

Critics also warn the rule could allow investigations to stall indefinitely, with cases stuck in federal review while misconduct allegations remain unresolved.

The core concern from legal advocates is simple:
America already has a system for holding attorneys accountable — independent state bar regulators.
