I didn’t used to think this was okay. When I was running in the NCAA in college we did “cross country lent” where we would give up all alcohol and sweets for the whole season. The intention was for us to stay focused and get as lean as possible. The result was that it made me crave sugar constantly and then as soon as the season was over, I would binge on desserts.
🧁
When the season was coming to an end, when we were supposed to be thinking about the national championships, all I could think about was what I was gonna eat when the season was finally over.
🍦
I kept doing this for my first few years as a professional athlete too. Most of my other teammates were doing the same thing so it felt normal.
🍪
Now I know. That shit is not normal.
🍨
I’m training really hard every day (except now I take one rest day every week) and I allow myself some kind of treat any day that I want it. Sometimes it’s a cookie with my cappuccino. Or going for ice cream after dinner.
🍪 🥛
The result is that I don’t obsess over it. If I want a cookie, I just have it. But the wanting it and the craving takes up so much less brain space now. There’s not so much of an emotional charge around sweets.
🍫
So for any athlete who might be reading this and thinking they can never have sweets if they want to be serious in their sport, don’t believe that lie.
