Most faceoff athletes focus on strength and reps, but overlook one of the biggest separators at the X: hand speed and finger control.

That’s where ball bounces come in.

This drill trains the small muscles that actually control the clamp — your fingers, grip, and wrist stabilization.

Three reasons this drill is valuable for FO athletes:

Neural speed
Catching and releasing the ball quickly forces your fingers and forearms to contract rapidly over and over again. This trains your nervous system to fire faster — which helps shorten the time between the whistle and your clamp.

Hand independence
Doing the drill right hand, left hand, and both hands forces each side to work independently. This matters because while clamping, your RH and LH do different things and have different fundamentals.

Finger strength & dexterity
Faceoffs are controlled by small, precise movements — not big arm strength. This drill improves your ability to open, close, and stabilize your fingers quickly while maintaining control.

It’s simple.
It’s portable.
And if you do it consistently, it will help build faster, more controlled hands.

Try:
• 10 seconds right hand
• 10 seconds left hand
• 10 seconds both hands
• 3 rounds

Add it to your warm-up or hand-speed work.
