Looking back on the trilogy of exhibitions at White Cube Bermondsey, London, Anselm’s most recent, ‘Finnegans Wake’ (2023), responding to James Joyce’s 1939 novel, is arguably the most ambitious of the three.⁠
⁠
As Brian Dillon (briangdillon) put it, the exhibition ‘is a passage in which his work rushes past us into the future – where we can say, with Joyce, ‘Here comes everybody’.’⁠

In ‘Superstrings, Runes, The Norns, Gordian Knot’ (2019), Anselm’s sculpture and paintings brought together Greek mythology, ancient forms of writing and the speculations of string theory. ⁠
⁠
Back in 2016, ‘Walhalla’ comprised large scale installation, sculpture and painting, the title of the exhibition referring to both the mythical place in Norse mythology and the neo-classical monument built by Ludwig I, King of Bavaria, in 1842.⁠
