One of the most underrated places to catch a soccer game in the US ⬇️

📍 Asheville, NC (Asheville City SC)

Asheville City SC was founded in 2016, after six old high school friends found an article about how to start a team from scratch. It was only supposed to be a fun hobby, until a few months later, the club played its first-ever game in front of 2,000+ people. Soon enough, it turned into something much more real, steadily growing over the years. Then, Hurricane Helene struck, and the bond with the community they’d served for nearly a decade grew even stronger. 

At the start of 2025, the club hosted the first sporting event in Asheville since the hurricane, squaring off against Greenville Triumph in the first round of the US Open Cup. It was a cathartic moment for the city, and we had the honor of driving our bus to the game and covering the match. 

From the roped off field in the middle of the woods to the lone apartment building towering above us just meters away from the pitch, Greenwood Field in Asheville felt like a true fortress. On paper, this USL2 team was the underdog, going up against a club a whole division above them. 

But straight from the opening whistle, Asheville held their ground. All thanks to a beautiful synergy between players and fans that to this day, we struggle to describe. For everyone present, it felt like a freeing moment to heal. The old adage that football is the most important of the least important things in life seemed to ring true amidst those trees. 

From fans and players alike, we heard how this match was a time to pause after a difficult few months and simply enjoy a soccer game for 120 minutes. In the end, the Blues lost in penalties, falling just short of the “Cupset.” But as many of the fans told us, it didn’t matter. Simply getting to be there alongside their neighbors, enjoying the beautiful game, was a victory more important than any scoreline. 

If you’re ever in North Carolina, this remains a stadium and a club, that you must absolutely visit.
