Leeds’ oldest continuously running pub, Whitelocks, had plans to sell its revived 1970s pale ale Double Diamond for 25p as part of a four-day promo.

But according to publican Edward Mason, the council pulled the plug the same day following a complaint, saying the deal breached mandatory licence conditions around minimum alcohol pricing and amounted to an “irresponsible” promotion.

After taking legal advice, the pub instead began offering the first 3.8% pint for free to thank loyal customers. Mason said the council later confirmed the free pint would be permitted. A council spokesperson said the original 25p offer would have breached licence conditions and confirmed it would not go ahead.

For context, in England alcohol cannot be sold below cost price (duty plus VAT), and the NHS recommends adults drink no more than 14 units per week on a regular basis.
