Jody Potts-Joseph begins her 1,000-mile journey across Alaska.

The Hän Gwich’in musher and First Alaskans star has begun the 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race — a nearly 1,000-mile route from Anchorage to Nome that takes about 10 days.

Dog mushing has been part of Alaska Native lifeways for generations, connecting communities across the land long before the arrival of snowmobiles and other modern transportation.

At the ceremonial start, her sled dogs wore hand-beaded blankets created by Native women across Alaska, Canada, and the Lower 48, honoring the journey before the team set off on the trail.

Her daughter, model Quannah Chasinghorse, joined her during the ceremonial start in Anchorage before the race officially began.

Now the journey to Nome is underway.
