Gordon Parks was a trailblazer and pioneer who used his passions to provide a platform for his people and capture the essence of us. He used the camera and the world around him to show not only the state of African-American life, but bring attention to the creativity of his people. His work was transformative for how generations of black creatives saw themselves and the world represented, opening their imaginations to the possibility of storytelling through images of the Black experience.

As the first African-American photographer on the staff of Life magazine, and first African-American director of major motion pictures, Parks paved the path for those who would come after him and continue the legacy of excellence. Gordon, we thank you for your contributions to our community and the culture you embraced, captured, and displayed so beautifully. You saw us for who and what we were. Strong, striking, and resilient people.
