Spellbound Secrets 🪄

These Egyptian amulets, acquired by Edward Drummond Libbey and Florence Scott Libbey during their 1906 trip to Egypt — were among the very first objects to enter the Museum’s collection. 

Crafted from faience and steatite, they depict sacred animals like the ibis and crocodile, alongside powerful symbols such as the ankh (the hieroglyph for “life”) and papyrus column.

Their power was believed to be activated through touch. Many were pierced and sewn directly into mummy wrappings — including the winged scarab beetle at center, its wings intentionally broken as part of ancient ritual practice.
