When people gathered to honor the life of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, his son asked them to leave their politics outside.

It wasn’t a request to ignore differences. Jackson spent much of his life confronting the country’s deepest divides, advocating for civil rights, peace, and economic and social justice while challenging America to become more inclusive and more just. But he also believed that progress required bringing people together across those differences, which is why many came to see him as a unifying voice in American public life.

That spirit shaped the message at his homegoing service, where Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives were all welcomed to come pay their respects. The idea was simple: a life dedicated to expanding the American promise is large enough to hold the full spectrum of what it means to be an American.
