One of the most misunderstood structures in facial work is the SMAS the superficial musculoaponeurotic system.

This layer connects the facial muscles with the skin and helps transmit the movement of the muscles to the surface of the face. In simple words, it is part of the lifting support system of the face.

Because of this, many people think the SMAS should be stretched strongly during facial massage.

But in reality, SMAS is not meant to be aggressively stretched.

It is a fibrous connective structure. When we repeatedly overstretch or pull connective tissue, the body may respond with inflammation and fibrosis. Instead of becoming more youthful and elastic, the tissue can become thicker, stiffer, and less mobile.

This is why in professional facial work we should mobilize the tissues, not overstretch them.

The goal is to create movement, glide, circulation, and lymphatic flow, while respecting the natural architecture of the face. When we work intelligently and gently, the tissues respond with better tone, better circulation, and a natural lift.

True lifting does not come from force.
It comes from understanding anatomy and respecting the tissues we touch.
