You may not know what a TIF district is, but you've been to one.

Greater Cincinnati's 21st-century growth has been heavily shaped by tax-increment financing districts, one of the most valuable and confounding ways to pay for development.

TIFs − as they're typically called − are big money. In Cincinnati alone, over $131 million sits in TIF bank accounts, ready to fund the acquisition of prominent properties, upgrade sidewalks around old buildings, or construct subsidized apartments.

These districts are funded by taxpayer dollars. But indirectly.

So do they work? Do we need all the ones we have? Do we need more? That's what Cincinnati leaders also want to know and plan to figure out over the next few months after recently approving a 15-year extension to 20 of the city's 36 TIF districts.

Here's what to know. Read the full story at the link in our bio. (📸: Liz Dufour + Michael Nyerges/The Enquirer) #cincinnati #cincinnatiohio #tif #tifs
