Otega Oweh scored 21 points and Denzel Aberdeen delivered a clutch basket in the final seconds to lift No. 9 seed Kentucky to a 78–72 win over No. 8 seed Missouri in the second round of the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee. The Wildcats held off a late Missouri rally to advance to the quarterfinals.

Aberdeen finished with 16 points, including a key shot with 22.5 seconds remaining that extended Kentucky’s lead to two possessions. The Wildcats (21–12) appeared in control for much of the second half, building a 16-point lead with 14:33 remaining before Missouri surged back into the game.

Missouri (20–12) used a 10–2 run during a five-minute Kentucky scoring drought to cut the deficit to 60–57 with eight minutes left. Mark Mitchell led the Tigers’ comeback effort, scoring 23 of his game-high 32 points in the second half. His basket with 2:34 remaining gave Missouri its first lead of the half at 70–69.

Kentucky responded quickly. Oweh drove into the lane for a go-ahead layup with 1:13 left, then forced a turnover by knocking the ball off Mitchell’s leg on the next possession. With the shot clock winding down on the following trip, Aberdeen used a pump fake to get into the lane and bank in a contested shot for a 75–70 lead before sealing the win with two late free throws.

T.O. Barrett added 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Missouri.

Kentucky now advances to face No. 1 seed and fourth-ranked Florida in Friday’s quarterfinals after dropping both regular-season meetings to the Gators.
